We sang at the Festival of Remembrance at Bere Ferrers in November and we have done a number of school visits, two more retirement home visits (with excellent RNLI fundraising), a private party and the Wassailing evening in Bere Ferrers. A planned session at Cotehele at Christmas had to be cancelled due to the weather as did a planned visit to the Cargreen Yacht Club Regatta due to the mourning period for the late Queen.

We suffered a great loss with the passing of Robin who was a founding member of the Tars. We are very fortunate that Jane continues to be a major part of the Tars to organise us and keep us in order!

Plans are shaping up well for 2023 with the next event being a singalong event in the Olde Plough on 17 February. More school visits and events are in the pipeline along with visits to Shanty Festivals at Cockwood Harbour and of course Falmouth.

We continue to have practice sessions most Wednesdays at either the Bere Ferrers Social Club and the Stannary Arms in Tavistock. Everybody is welcome to come along and listen any time.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6312060733834409830.post-50690869224568385742022-09-04T20:17:00.000+01:002022-09-04T20:17:11.115+01:00Fundraiser at Lamerton Church
In early September the Tars did a fund raiser at Lamerton Church. On
November 4, the Tavy Tars were sang for the largest and most
appreciative audience they have had for some while! We paid a visit
to Hyde Park Junior School in Plymouth. Year 2 at the school have
been working on topics about the sea, and the Tars were invited to
join them to sing a few shanties and also tell them a bit about
shanty singing.

The
Tars were really impressed how well-behaved all the 90 children were
– but also that they were all so enthusiastic in joining in some of
the choruses and actions. All credit to teacher Hannah Brown and her
colleagues at Hyde Park School.

Some
of the children gave us their ideas about ‘what they would
do with the Drunken Sailor’. So the misbehaving seaman might face a
lion, a hamster and being licked all over by a puppy (why not? That
could be a salutary lesson for some sailors…).

According
to Hannah “the children (and adults)
absolutely loved it and haven't stopped talking about it. It was
great to see them all engaged, laughing and enjoying themselves after
such a tricky year or so.” So a fun time was had by all
– including the Tavy Tars. Who needs the Albert Hall when you’ve
got 90 keen 6 and 7 year olds singing along with you?

We
cannot show photos of the event, but we love some of the thank you
letters we have been sent.

A socially distanced group of local supporters turned out. Being such a beautiful evening with HW at 20:00 there were a lot of boats on the water. Whilst we were singing ‘Take me in Your Lifeboat’ a load of kayakers came along to listen and clap along! No kayakers were in trouble at this time and thankfully no lifeboat needed.
We were lucky enough to sing on the Kathleen and May back in 2011,

The Tars took day trips to St.Mary’s aboard the Scillonian III
three years running, singing aboard to raise funds for the RNLI.
Generally a pleasure - apart, perhaps, from one grimly memorable
crossing, when a combination of sea state and café aromas proved a
tad too challenging for this particular Tar…

The song ‘James Craig’ is a favourite in the Tars repertoire (the
song was written by Rudi Sunde, late of Auckland’s ‘Maritime
Crew’). The James Craig was built in Sunderland in 1874 as the
‘Clan Macleod’. She was eventually sold into the Tasman trade
under her present name. Although she became a hulk in Tasmania, she
was rescued and brought back into superb sailing condition, and is
now based at Pyrmont Harbour, Sydney. Tars member Clive was able to
sing her namesake song on board in 2016.
Although the Tars haven’t been able to sing aboard yet, we came
close in the July 2019. While we singing on the quay at Calstock, the
Tamar barge Lynher crept up the adjacent river behind us. She was
then right alongside the site of the former Goss shipyard where she
was launched in 1896. Many years of dedicated enterprise and effort
have brought this fine local vessel back to life from being a mere
hulk in her namesake river.

Perhaps our most informal event last year (Saturday June 15th 2019), was in Falmouth High Street. The song that captivated them was “Sammy’s Gone Away”, even though I did manage to start in the wrong key! <span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Over several years, our good friend Vic Stimson from the RNLI arranged for the Tavy Tars to sing on the Scillonian on a day trip to St Mary’s.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">The weather was kind on the outward sailing to Scilly in September 2015 and we were able to sing on the deck - an exhilarating experience. But our return crossing later in the day was a different story, the wind had got up and the sea was unfriendly..! Unable to stand steadily, we wedged ourselves to a handrail at the front of the lounge, and sang as lustily as we could to an unhappy captive audience. It worked for me, never a good sailor, I was too focused on staying upright whilst playing and singing to feel sick. I think we did a good service for our fellow passengers that day - the RNLI benefitted from a good collection as they alighted in Penzance.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Sadly, Vic died a few years ago and with him our link to the Scillonian.
This was a fundraiser for Calstock Village Hall and was well attended.
The Tars sounded off with a shanties and songs of the sea set, followed by the KHB with an old timey, bluegrassy set.
The two groups teamed up for a great finale of KHB songs. The stage seemed to flex a bit, but stood up to the onslaught!
It all finished in time for those who had travelled by train to catch the last train down the valley too..
The Tavy Tars kicked the evening off with their usual rollicking sea shanties combined with contrasting lyrical songs from the sea. They were followed by local harp builder Tim Hamson who gave a wonderful performance of early Vivaldi music written for the mandolin. He was playing a replica he had built of an 18th century Welsh triple harp. Later in the evening, Ferrers Reel gave us a lively delivery of various jigs and reels. The evening closed with the Tavy Tars leading a vigorous singalong, the audience raising their voices with gusto.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">A purpose of the event was for the Tavy Tars to present money they had raised over the past two years to their chosen charities. This included over £1500 being shared between the RNLI, TASS, St Luke’s Hospice and Help For Heroes.
We did a couple of venues, one at the Teignmouth Corinthian YC and another over the water in Shaldon at the London Inn.
This festival was very well organised and the hospitality was excellent. Thank you to all concerned.
We passed something of a milestone at the Falmouth
International Sea Shanty Festival this year in that it was our tenth
consecutive appearance! Once again the sun shone and an estimated 50,000 revellers
packed the streets to enjoy a wide range of talent from all over the world. The
crowd included scores of visitors from a very large cruise liner berthed at
County Wharf very close to the Skinners Stage on Custom House Quay. Beer and
pasties were enjoyed by all the crew between performances at the Skinners Stage,
5 Degrees West, The Grapes, Toast and The Games Room. Many junior members of
the audience on Custom House Quay joined in and danced with us in front of the
stage. They really seemed to enjoy the rollicking rhythms of Take me In Your Lifeboat, our version of
Whip Jamboree, Johnny Come Down To Hilo, Yankee Clipper and many other of our favourite songs. We in
turn, thoroughly enjoyed many of the less familiar songs reverberating around
the town from venues indoors and outdoors, large and small. A wonderful weekend
shared with some wonderful folks!
